The S class boats were the first American postwar submarines, but their construction had begun during WWI. These boats boats represented a new approach to submarine construction by the US Navy, they were built to increase the range, durability, size, and number of torpedoes carried over that of it's World War I predecessors. The S class wa actually a larger improved version of the wartime K, L, and O Class boats. Between 1918-1924 51 boats were built, in four versions of them were constructed. These boats were the backbone of the US submarine fleet in-between World Wars I and II.

During the war new units were indispensable, but the British yards couldn't execute war need of Royal Navy. And in these situation British accepted American help and filled US submarines. Because of lack of submarine crews Poles received one sub - Jastrzab
