U class submarines were intended as replacement of the H class as unarmed training boats. Because they were small and handy they proved very useful in the shallow waters of the North Sea and the Mediterranean. The U class was neither spectacular nor technologically advanced designs, but they were fast diving, manoeuvrable, well armed and reliable boats, whose operational performance compared very favourably with foreign contemporaries. They were distinguished by electric drive when surface, the main motors being driven from the diesel powered generators, and were of single hull type with an operational depth limit of 60 m. These boats were developments of the U pre-war class. These little submarines were most effective units of Polish Navy during II World War. Most of their sunk they have got in Mediterranean. Because of their successes Sokol and Dzik were named Terrible Twins
