Rated as torpilleurs d'escadre to differentiate them from the contre-torpilleurs, the Bourrasque class of the 1922 Programme was the first rench postwar standard destroyer design. In machinery terms they were somewhat disappointing: on trials at less then normal displacement none exceeded 34.5 kts, 30 kts was the best sea speed fully loaded, and the radius was only 2300nm at 14 kts, far less than the designed 3000 nm at 15 kts.

The armament was powerful by contemporary standards but the low rate of the fire (4-5 rounds pre minute) destroyed the advatage of a heavier shell.
